Windows Vista Business SP2 – Windows Updates Hangs

Installed a fresh Windows Vista Business SP2 on an HP DC7900 a couple days ago and since then I haven’t been able to install Windows updates.

I’ve installed/reinstalled the Windows Update Agent 3 (with /wuforce), re-registered Windows Updates DLL files, and have also done an sfc /scannow.  None of these actions have resolved the issue.

Google leads me to all types of solutions, hacks, workarounds, thoughts, and so on.  Nothing worked.

I downloaded WSUS Offline Update tool and worked around this issue.  After applying those updates, I could successfully Check/Install new updates.

Office 2016 Trial on Windows 10 Rearms with Build Updates

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

I had 7 days left on my Office 2016 trial remaining when I decided to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 build 14385 the other day.
After upgrading, I launched Office and it went through a setup process and I saw that I had 29 days left on the trial.  I was OK that it extended my trial as I figured it was just a fluke.
Well, Build 14388 was released 2 days ago so I just upgraded to that.  The Office 2016 trial rearmed again and now I have 29 days again.
Not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but I’ll take it.

The Fine Print

*It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. Frequently Asked Questions

After I upgrade for free in the first year, do I have to pay after the first year?
No. The promotional offer expires after the first year. The promotional offer is a free upgrade to Windows 10.
Is Windows 10 subscription based?
No. Microsoft clarified what they meant by “Windows ‘as a service'” in the consumer preview event. Windows 10 will still be licensed per device.

Windows Language Pack Direct Download Links

These are the official direct download links to Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7 language packs.
How to Install Language Pack on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1
For Windows 8.1 and Windows 8, rename the file to .MLC instead of .CAB and double-click to execute.
You can also obtain these language packs through Windows Update or Language Control Panel in Windows 8/Windows 8.1.
Note:  If you install a language pack on Windows 8 and then upgrade to Windows 8.1, you will need to reinstall the language pack.  Language packs are specific to the Windows version so you cannot install a Windows 7 language pack on Windows 8, etc.

Windows 8 PC Reset

Note
If you upgraded your PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and your PC has a Windows 8 recovery partition, resetting your PC will restore Windows 8. You’ll need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 after the reset has finished.
Warning
All of your personal files will be deleted and your settings will be reset. All apps that you installed will be removed. Only apps that came with your PC will be reinstalled.

 To reset your PC

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
    (If you’re using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then clickChange PC settings.)
  2. Tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Recovery.
  3. Under Remove everything and reinstall Windows, tap or click Get started.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Note
You’ll be asked to choose whether you want to erase data quickly or thoroughly. If you choose to erase data quickly, some data might be recoverable using special software. If you choose to erase data thoroughly, this will take longer but it makes recovering data less likely.
